Posted February 29, 2012 at 12:00 PM by Don Kapuscinski
Nike Inc. showed off the latest handiwork of its Nike Better World initiative Tuesday when it unveiled its so-called Summer of Innovation lineup at an event in New York. The new products are aimed at the Summer Olympics taking place in London. Nike's efforts to create a closed-loop system — one that takes old shoes or shirts and uses them to make new products — led to the announcement Tuesday of some new steps forward in sustainable manufacturing from the sportswear giant.
Nike's Flynit Racer and Flyknit Trainer, announced Tuesday, were made using a manufacturing process that reduces waste by using special yarns creating a form-fitting upper without the need for a number of materials and cuts. In addition, Nike expanded its used of recycled plastic bottles in fabric for high-performance apparel. In play for several years, Nike increased its use of the technology, making its new Nike Hyper Elite basketball shorts from 100 percent recycled polyester and the jerseys from 96 percent recycled polyester. The result is a uniform made from about 22 plastic bottles.
In addition, its Nike Pro TurboSpeed track and field uniform is made from 82 percent of recycled polyester at about 13 recycled plastic bottles each.
