NYC to get electric truck manufacturing plant
Posted November 30, 2011 at 12:00 PM by Peter Kelly
New York will soon be getting a little greener. Smith Electric, a company that makes zero-emissions commercial trucks, will be manufacturing them in the Big Apple starting in 2012. The company already has plants in Kansas City, MO, and near Newcastle, England. NYC officials gave the company roughly $11 million in incentives to build in the city. The plant will reportedly be in the South Bronx, and the move is expected to create 100 jobs.
Smith’s all-electric trucks can travel up to 150 miles on a single charge, at less than half the annual operating cost of comparably-sized standard diesel trucks. Frito Lay has used Smith trucks, and Coca-Cola has also agreed to use them. While a range of 150 miles is unlikely to make the truck a widespread alternative to its diesel counterpart, for companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint and to save money on short-haul routes, Smith trucks could be a viable solution.

Manufacturers Give Back
Posted November 28, 2011 at 12:00 PM by Peter Kelly
Manufacturers do more than create jobs, generate economic growth, and make the products we all depend on. For example: Ball Corporation and its employees raised almost $1 million for two Colorado United Way chapters in a mere one week time span in October. All told, over the last decade, the United Way has received more than $6 million from Ball and its employees. Ball is one of the...

Dynamics GP vs. NetSuite: A True Story of Flexibility
Posted November 23, 2011 at 07:29 AM by Peter Kelly
One of the greatest selling points of NetSuite is its packaged cloud functionality that reduces upfront IT costs and speeds up and simplifies deployment. While this is what drives many businesses to select a NetSuite solution, it is also the reason they leave NetSuite. NetSuite lacks the one thing that organizations need to thrive in a dynamic marketplace: flexibility. We are currently...

Why Manufacturers Should Invest in ERP Software and Technology
Posted November 22, 2011 at 12:00 PM by Peter Kelly
Most manufacturers are very concerned with operations and place less emphasis on the finance or accounting operations. They understand where their money is made: on the plant floor. However, this thought process can often lead to much less attention being paid to how much time clerks are spending entering data and how much time is spent finding and adjusting inventory. I have seen...

Manufacturing revs up in good sign for economy
Posted November 21, 2011 at 12:30 PM by Peter Kelly
The U.S. economy has been showing signs of gathering some speed recently. Factories are running at a faster pace; inflation is almost nonexistent; and there's even been some hiring, recent data show. The speed bump on the road ahead may be Europe, however, economists say.
"The consistent theme in the recent flow of economic data has been one of accelerating momentum in economic activity,"...

Manufacturers Expand in Chicago and Dallas
Posted November 18, 2011 at 12:00 PM by Don Kapuscinski
Two surveys released earlier this month show expansion in the economy, with one of them rebounding from past contractions while the other finds manufacturers growing rapidly in its region. The Texas Manufacturing Outlook Survey from the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank found that the current economic environment improved in October after five months of contracting sentiment. The index...

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that nonfarm business labor productivity rose 3.1 percent in the third quarter, with unit labor costs falling 2.4 percent. (All percentages are in annual rates of growth.) For manufacturers, we saw a return to healthy 5.4 percent jump in productivity. Once again a number of important tax incentives are scheduled to expire on December 31st, clearing the way for a tax increase on millions of U.S. taxpayers that benefit from these provisions. Manufacturers have an interest in a number of these provisions including the Controlled Foreign Corporation (CFC) look through rules, deferral for active financing, and the R&D tax credit that help us...

Beware of ERP Software Demos
Posted November 11, 2011 at 12:00 PM by Don Kapuscinski
If you have ever gone shopping for any business software that required more than a little spending money, you have probably met with vendors and tried out demos of their products. For the vendors, it is all about emotions. When it is time for the demo, the logical discussion is over, and the vendor is hoping to impress you and draw you in with the software’s sparkly visual appeal...

Manufacturing and the World Series
Posted November 10, 2011 at 12:00 PM by Don Kapuscinski
I read an interesting article a few days ago from the Texas Department of Agriculture titled ‘Without Agriculture There Would be No World Series’. This title peaked my interest since I was up late watching the Rangers and Cardinals. I had no rooting interest in either team but that is an altogether different story. Reading this article was very interesting; it lists all the...

Are You Confident Your ERP Software is Running Correctly?
Posted November 9, 2011 at 12:00 PM by Don Kapuscinski
A study which was published last month, found that just seven per cent of business bosses are confident the software their company is running is deployed correctly. How can that be possible? Were they present during the planning phase and beta-test period when the software was rolled out? Did they forget to mention an important function that they wanted in their software? Maybe...

Stay Focused and Stay Sharp

Someone who seems to be knowledgeable in a broad range of trades but is not necessarily great at any particular one is commonly referred to as a “Jack of all Trades, Master of None”. A similar effect can
happen with business applications too. Organizations can take the right path to software selection by being laser-focused on the business issues that need to be addressed...

Report Shows Manufacturing Sector Still Growing
Posted November 4, 2011 at 12:00 PM by Peter Kelly
A monthly manufacturing survey from the Institute for Supply Management released Monday shows the factory sector is still growing, albeit modestly. The ISM’s U.S. manufacturing ISM index showed a reading of 51.6 for September, coming in above expectations after a reading of 50.6 in August. A reading above 50 indicates growth in the sector. Separately, a report on U.S. construction spending...

Data Migration and ERP Implementations: Do Not Be Afraid
Posted November 3, 2011 at 12:00 PM by Peter Kelly
You’ve undoubtedly heard the horror stories of botched data migration and the disastrous effects it can have on ERP implementations. Some businesses are so terrified of the process that they remain prisoners to their ill-fitting, work-around accounting software, when what they need is an integrated business management solution. Data migration doesn’t have to be a nightmare. ...

Yes I know there are others...nobody invests back into ther systems and has the resourses that these three companies have to keep their respective systems on the forefront of technology. Only Microsoft invests more into their systems more than Oracle and SAP...combined!

What A Prospect Learned When They Didn’t Choose Microsoft Dynamics GP
Posted November 1, 2011 at 12:00 PM by Peter Kelly
I recently checked back with my champion at a prospect client, a sale which I lost about four months ago. The selected upgraded software is purchased; the annual plan locked in; funds are spent for implementation, consulting, travel expenses, and training. All that’s left is “free” online training. The key employee that drove the decision has dug his heels in to defend the implementation...
